Aisha Buhari, Nigeria's First Lady

Nigerian first lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari’s Monday outburst over lack of basic medical gadgets and consumables in the country’s presidential clinic has exposed how bad the healthcare system that is supposed to cater for the well-being of about 180 million populace of Africa’s most populous nation has been.

On Monday 9th October 2017, wives of all governors in Nigeria converged in the nation’s capital to brainstorm on the issue of maternal and child mortality.

The great convergence which was hosted by the First Lady became necessary as Nigeria is rated the second contributor to the global maternal mortality index.

The wives of the Governors as well as the First lasy joined other stakeholders in the healthcare business to discuss the problem.

Every single day, statistics from the WHO says  Nigeria loses about 2,300 under-five year olds and 145 women of childbearing age.

Already worried by this disturbing statistics, the First was further pushed to anger when she discovered that even in the number one clinic within her husband’s presidential palace children  and mothers could still die.
This was so because the clinic that was supposed to be managing the health of the president and the Vice President’s family has no functional X-ray machine. Analgesic are also scarce commodity in the seat of power clinic.

The First Lady was miffed by her discovery and she decided to go her usual way of exposing the rot in the public.

When called upon to declare the occasion open, Mrs Bihari chose to go off her speech to address the issue.

She said, “I called the Aso Clinic to find out if they have an X-Ray machine, they said it’s not working
“In the end I had to go to a hospital owned and operated by foreigners 100 per cent.
“There is a budget for the Hospital and if you go there now, you will see a number of constructions going on but they don’t have a single syringe there.
“What is the purpose of the buildings if there are no equipment there to work with?
“You can imagine what happens across the states to governors’ wives if this will happen to me in Abuja.”
Mrs Buhari callee for the probe of the N3.2 billion budget the clinic gets annually.
The First Lady’s outburst came barely a week after her daughter, Zara Buhari took to Twitter to lament the lack of analgesic in the same clinic that gets such a fat budget.
Zarah wondered what other ordinary Nigerians may be facing in other public hospitals..
Nigeria has become a notorious country with one of the worst healthcare system that could not manage the wellbeing of its citizens.
It is on record that while millionsof the population that are not well to do die in hospitals due to lack of facilities and efficient medics, many of its top elites and elder statesmen die in foreign hospitals where they go to seek better medication after their conditions had deteriorated..
